Spawn to Substrate Ratios Explained
The spawn to substrate ratio shapes colonisation speed and contamination resistance. Learn what ratio to use and why even mixing matters.
Why the ratio matters
The spawn to substrate ratio is how much colonised grain you mix into bulk substrate. It has a big effect on speed and on how well the mycelium resists contamination.
A good starting point
Use 1 part grain spawn to 2 to 5 parts bulk substrate by weight. Around 1 to 4 suits most gourmet species.
Higher versus lower
- A higher spawn ratio, such as 1 to 2, colonises faster because the mycelium covers the substrate sooner. This lowers contamination risk and helps beginners.
- A lower ratio, such as 1 to 5, stretches your spawn further but leaves more room for competitors and takes longer.
Getting it right
Weigh your spawn and substrate rather than guessing, and mix thoroughly so the spawn spreads evenly. Even distribution matters as much as the ratio, because gaps give contaminants a foothold. If your conditions are less than ideal, lean toward more spawn.
