What spawn to substrate ratio should I use?

A spawn rate of 1 part grain spawn to 2 to 5 parts bulk substrate by weight works for most gourmet species. Higher spawn ratios colonise faster and resist contamination because the mycelium covers the substrate sooner, which helps beginners. Lower ratios stretch your spawn further but leave more room for competitors. Around 1 to 4 is a good general starting point.
