What is the best substrate for growing mushrooms?

It depends on the species. Oysters fruit well on pasteurised wheat or paddy straw and on supplemented sawdust. Wood-lovers such as shiitake, lion's mane, and reishi prefer hardwood sawdust with a bran supplement, often called Masters Mix. Button mushrooms need composted substrate. Matching the substrate to the species matters more than any single recipe.
