Do I need to flame sterilise my scalpel or needle?

For agar work and syringe transfers, yes. Heating the blade or needle until it glows kills anything on it, and letting it cool briefly stops it from harming the mycelium. Flame before each cut or transfer and again when you finish. For liquid culture into grain through a port, a quick flame of the needle between jars is enough.
