Yes, for many grows. If you work with liquid culture and colonised grain spawn rather than open agar, a clean still air box is enough, and careful work in a low-traffic room can succeed. A flow hood becomes worth it only when you do a lot of agar work or scale up, because it drops contamination rates sharply. Beginners rarely need one.
