What does bacterial contamination look and smell like?

Bacterial contamination, often called wet spot, shows as slimy, wet, grey or yellowish patches and gives off a sour or rotten smell. In grain it can look like a dull, wet zone that never colonises. It usually follows substrate that was too wet or under-sterilised. A sour smell is the clearest sign, and affected material should be discarded.
